Dr. Hall Schools Local Fifth Graders on Prince and Jimi Hendrix
As part of the ‘Real Men Read’ Literacy Project, Professor of German Studies, Dr. Mirko Hall, read and discussed a book about Jimi Hendrix with fifth graders at Jesse S. Bobo Elementary School in Spartanburg, and shared some stories about Prince with them. Dr. Hall discussed how both artists were virtuoso instrumentalists and how their guitar styles and vocal deliveries influenced a number of popular music genres. The students were excited to learn that Dr. Hall lived within walking distance from the music store where Prince (supposedly) purchased his first guitar!
Dr. Hall’s combined review of Paul Hockenos’ Berlin Wall: A Story of Anarchy, Music, the Wall, and the Birth of the New Berlin (The New Press, 2017) and Joseph Pearson’s Cityscopes: Berlin (Reaktion, 2017) was published in this summer’s volume of the German Studies Review.
