Nadia Gathers ’15 graduated cum laude from Converse College, where she created her own Social Entrepreneurship curriculum. She integrated business, political science, and economics in order to design and implement creative solutions to the world’s most significant issues. Talk about a trailblazer!
“Converse pushes you into places where you weren’t as confident or experienced, but people here believe in you.”
“I came to Converse very shy – a bookworm,” Nadia said. “Converse draws that out of you and pushes you into places where you weren’t as confident or experienced, but people here believe in you.”
Originally a finance major, Nadia quickly realized that career direction was not the right fit for her. She explored various options from chemical engineering to creative writing and realized she wanted to craft a new path. “I realized that at the core of all my interests was empowering people, and social entrepreneurship did that in a creative way,” Nadia told People of Color in Tech. “We didn’t have a Social Entrepreneurship major, so I ended up designing the curriculum.”
While at Converse she played a key role in supporting interfaith dialogue through events including Speed Faithing and the Future Leaders Dialogue Dinner. A University Innovation Fellow, Nadia was part of a national movement educating students with the skills and attitudes needed to compete in an ever-changing economy, with a focus on entrepreneurship. The University Innovation Fellows program empowers students to become agents of change at their schools, creating new learning opportunities with peers and motivating others to seize new opportunities address and global challenges. As a fellow, Nadia even had the chance to spend the day at Google Headquarters in California!
Nadia is currently working as the Communications Coordinator at CODE2040 in San Francisco. CODE2040 is a nonprofit organization which provides opportunities, networks, and support for stellar minority engineering talent.
