We’re proud to celebrate three Converse University Master of Education alumni whose dedication to education has earned recognition across Spartanburg County. At OneSpartanburg, Inc.’s 2026 Annual Celebration, Ben Coates ’81, Livingston “Liv” Hawkins III ’25, and Rhiannon Wyatt ’09 joined fellow community leaders as they were honored for the important work they do every day.

Livingston “Liv” Hawkins III, a 2025 Converse University Master of Education graduate, was named Young Professional of the Year at OneSpartanburg, Inc.’s Annual Celebration on September 17, 2026, at Fifth Third Park. A dedicated community advocate, Hawkins serves on the boards of VRTY Arthouse and Keep OneSpartanburg Beautiful, represents alumni on the Spartanburg Methodist College Board of Trustees, and is a member of Spartanburg’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee. He is also the founder and blogger behind The Walking Spartan, which reflects his commitment to community engagement and making Spartanburg a more connected, accessible place to live. During his time at Converse, Hawkins served as a Model League delegate and resident director, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to leadership and service.

Two additional Converse Master of Education alumni were recognized for their outstanding contributions to education at the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Annual Celebration. Ben Coates ’81 was honored as Teacher of the Year for Spartanburg School District 1, where he teaches at Chapman High School. Rhiannon Wyatt ’09 received the Teacher of the Year recognition for Spartanburg School District 6, where she serves at Pauline-Glenn Springs Elementary School. Their recognition celebrates the dedication, leadership and lasting impact of Converse alumni in classrooms across Spartanburg County.

Converse’s Master of Education offers experienced teachers the opportunity to enhance their academic specialty with advanced courses in professional education. While each MEd program area at Converse has specified core requirements, there is considerable flexibility, including online programs in Advanced Studies, Art Education and Gifted Education, so that teachers may pursue special areas of interest.
