UNDERWOOD PACES TUSCULUM TO 79-55 WIN OVER CONVERSE
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Brooke Underwood recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 assists, while Tusculum head coach Missy Tiber recorded her 100th career victory as the Pioneers defeated Converse 79-55 Friday night in the opening game of the 2006 Ferguson Enterprises Lady Pioneer Classic.
Underwood paced five players in double-figure scoring including Chassity Martin (16), Diana Neves (13) and Shantae Shank (11). Rookie Kat Spears tallied five points and a game-high 12 rebounds in her collegiate debut.
Converse (0-2) was led in scoring by Kathryn McClain who accounted for 17 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Tusculum (1-0) used a 27-7 run late in the opening period to pull out to a 41-22 halftime advantage.
The Pioneer defense forced 34 turnovers on 17 steals including four by freshman Carlie Lakey. Tusculum parlayed its defensive efforts into 32 points off turnovers.
Tusculum will face USC Upstate in on Saturday at 4 p.m. in day two action of the Ferguson Enterprises Lady Pioneer Classic. Converse will begin Saturday’s action with a 2 p.m. clash with West Liberty State.
