The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats volleyball team defeated Converse College Thursday evening at Williams Gymnasium 3-1, (23-30, 30-19, 30-28, and 30-28) in Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference play. The win improves the Lady Bobcats record to 25-7, (17-2 CVAC) while leaving Converse at 19-9, (14-5 CVAC).
After a sluggish start that saw the visitors jump out to a 4-1 lead, the Lady Bobcats clawed their way back into the game tying things up at six. Unfortunately, the All Stars maintained their momentum and pulled out a seven point game one victory.
Game two was a different story as the Lady Bobcats dominated every facet of the game, cruising to a 30-19 win to tie things at one game apiece. In game three, the All Stars came out of the gates quickly as they did in game one, racing out to a 5-2 lead, again forcing a Lady Bobcat time out. This time, the Lady Bobcats were able to bounce back, with a 5-0 run of their own that included three straight service aces from Trisha Reese. The team again went back and forth, point for point until the Lady Bobcats pulled ahead 27-22. The All Stars would not give up, taking five of the next six points before a Lees-McRae time out and the score 28-27. Katie Marie Legg would blast a kill from the right side to force game point but the All Stars were not about to fold just yet. With the score 29-28, Caty Honey’s kill would lock up the 2-1 lead for the home team.
Game four continued much like the first and third games with the third place All Stars giving the first place Lady Bobcats all they could handle. Lees-McRae opened the biggest lead of either team at 25-22 before Converse went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Lees-McRae would take a point lead, 27-26, before Converse would call time out. A 3-0 run by the Lady Bobcats would force match point, and another Converse time out. The All Stars would take the next two points to cut the Lady Bobcats lead to 29-28, before a foot foul on their next service would end the game, giving Lees-McRae the game, and the match, 30-28.
