All-Stars Triumph Over Caveliers
Converse College recorded its first win of the season Tuesday night, despite icy weather conditions that threatened to cancel the game. In front of a packed crowd, at Weisiger Center, the All-Stars defeated Montreat College 65-61.
In the first few minutes, Montreat held a small lead and at the 11:05 mark Converse had pulled within two points making the score 11-9. At the 9:43 mark, Melissa Ballard hit a three-pointer to put Converse in the lead permanently at 14-11.
The largest All-Star lead came at the 10:36 mark when the All-Stars were leading by 15. In spite of the 15-point lead, Montreat was able to pull within two points due to Converse turnovers and free throw opportunities with only 30 seconds remaining. However Brandi Criscitiello threw a long pass to Melissa Bunce who scored on an easy lay-up with only seconds remaining to seal the win.
Converse shooting percentage was balanced in both halves and they turned in an average 41.9% for the game. The Cavaliers shot only 30% for the game.
Melissa Bunce played her best game of the season, scoring a career-high 29 points and pulling down 10 rebounds making this her sixth double-double of the season. Freshman Brandi Criscitiello stepped up in this game and scored nine points and led the team in rebounds with 13. Julie Buchanan led the Cavaliers with 22 points.
The All-Stars host North Greenville College on Saturday, January 31st at 2:00PM.
