All-Stars Begin 2003 With Losses
Basketball QUEENS (1-04-03)
The All-Stars took to the hardwood January 4th against Coach Coil’s alma mater, Queens College but came up short with a score of 100-70. In a valiant effort, sophomore guards Melissa Ballard (Saluda, NC) and freshman Sophia Hofferberth (Bedfordale, Australia) did all they could as they combined for 39 of their teams 70 points. Ballard shot 8-of-13 from the field and went a team high 7-of-7 from the free throw stripe. As a team, the All-Stars grabbed 26 total rebounds and out-shot the Royals 94.4% to their 71.4% from the field.
BELMONT-ABBEY (1-06-03)
Hofferberth took charge with her 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists but watched as her team dropped a 78-53 loss to Belmont Abbey on January 6th. Both teams shot below 50% on the night but the difference was offensive rebounds and turnovers as BA out-rebounded Converse 19-7 and had 8 rebounds to Converse’s 16. Senior guard Kristi Farris (Camden, SC) followed Hofferberth with 11 points, 3-of-6 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
CARSON-NEWMAN (1-08-03)
Turnovers were the difference in this match-up as Converse took the road for the 5th time this season vs. the Eagles of Carson-Newman College. The All-Stars managed a season-high 30 turnovers and saw their season fall to 1-9 with a 98-63 loss. Leading the way was Ballard with a team-high 19 points, 3 assists, and an impressive free throw shooting hitting 9-of-10. Right behind her was junior transfer Katie Leonard (Moraine Valley CC, Oak Forest, IL) who had a season-high 11 points, going perfect from the field and behind the arc. The All-Stars shot an impressive 73.7% at the free-throw line on the night.
