Artist William Dunlap to Speak at Converse in Conjunction with "Emerging Carolinas" Juried Art Exhibit

In partnership with HUB-BUB, Converse College will present the Emerging Carolinas juried art exhibit, opening Sept. 27 at the HUB-BUB Showroom Gallery. Emerging Carolinas is a juried art exhibit that features the work of young, contemporary artists between the ages of 20 and 35 who currently reside in or attend a higher education institution within North or South Carolina.

Free and open to the public, the opening reception will be on Saturday, October 2 from 7:00—9:00 p.m. with the work on display through November 4. Serving as juror for the Emerging Carolinas exhibit is celebrated American artist William Dunlap, whose work has been collected by such prestigious museums as Corcoran Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

“Bill Dunlap is widely respected in the international art scene—a force to be reckoned with,” said Andrew Blanchard, associate professor of studio art, printmaking and photography. “He works hard to positively motivate younger artists; he has opened quite a number of doors for me in terms of his connections, which he is more than willing to share, I must say. His work is vastly collected by major names in popular culture, as well as the political sector—not only in the South—but on such a grander scale. For our students to be able to hear him speak (and a few were accepted into the show, too) is one of those moments in school that I hope they will look back upon.” Nearly 60 artists from the Carolinas submitted work for consideration. Dunlap narrowed the lot to 27 artists and will select the winners prior to the official opening. Cash prizes will be awarded for Best in Show ($1,250), First Place ($750) and Second Place ($500). In addition to the exhibition, the following events are free and open to the public.

Artist Lecture by juror William Dunlap • Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall at Converse College Dunlap will discuss his work from the past, as well as his new projects.

William Dunlap Emerging Carolinas Lecture • Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m. in The Showroom Gallery at HUB-BUB Dunlap will focus on the accepted work in the Emerging Carolinas Exhibit, speaking about the jury process, including the “how, why, and what” that makes the inaugural show hosted by HUB-BUB.

Emerging Carolinas Opening Reception • Saturday, October 2, 7:00–9:00 p.m. in The Showroom Gallery at HUB-BUB Join Hub-Bub and Converse College at the opening reception for their collaborative event, the “Emerging Carolinas” exhibition. HUB-BUB will host the much anticipated juried art competition at The Showroom, with awards being revealed the same night.
