Chemistry Student Wins ‘Top Female Scientist’ at SC Annual Science Meeting
Chemistry students and faculty attended the South Carolina Academy of Science Annual Meeting and the South Carolina Upstate Research Symposium.
At the South Carolina Academy of Science Annual Meeting (SCAS), Gillian Horn ’19 (Nisbet Honors) presented a talk titled, “1st Generation Amperometric Biosensing: An Adaptable Template for Laboratory Relevant Measurements of Galactose and Xanthine”. She conducted her independent research with Dr. Will Case. Kaybriana Spalding ’20 (Nisbet Honors) and Audrey Bourdages ’20 (Nisbet Honors) presented a poster titled “The Removal of Copper (II) Aqueous Ions via Hydrogel Formation of Sodium Alginate”. They worked with Dr. Jennifer Hawk on their research. Jessica Morgan ’18 (Nisbet Honors) presented a poster titled “Quantitative Assessment of Carbonyl Lone Pair-Pi Interactions Using a Small Molecule Model” based on independent research she did with Dr. Sheri Strickland.
Gillian Horn was awarded the “Overall Outstanding Female Scientist ” award and the “Dwight Camper Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award.” Jessica Morgan won 1st place for her poster in the Chemistry/Biochemistry division.
At the South Carolina Upstate Research Symposium (SCURS), Mikayla Santoro ’18 presented a poster titled “Quantification of Lead and Copper in Lipstick Using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy at the South Carolina Upstate Research Symposium (SCURS). Mikayla completed this research project as part of Dr. Jennifer Hawk’s Instrumental Methods class.
