Students and Faculty Exemplify Math Department at National Conference
Our Mathematics Department was well-represented at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis’ (NIMBioS) Blackwell-Tapia Conference and Awards Ceremony, held in Knoxville, TN.
Addie Ledbetter ’17 and Taylor Lashley ’18 accompanied Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Jessica Williams, to the event. The conference honors David Blackwell, the first African-American member of the National Academy of Science, and Richard Tapia, winner of the National Medal of Science in 2010, two seminal figures who inspired a generation of African-American, Native American and Latino/Latina students to pursue careers in mathematics.
The conference included scientific talks, poster presentations, panel discussions, and the awarding of the Blackwell-Tapia Prize. Dr. Williams, Ms. Ledbetter, and Ms. Lashley were travel fund awardees and received monetary awards to attend this conference.
