Learning to Believe: Meagan Moore ’05

Meagan Moore ‘05 is a first-grade teacher at Holly Springs-Motlow Creek Elementary School in Spartanburg District One, where she was honored as teacher of the year for 2014. It was as a Converse history major that she discovered how much more she was capable of than she had ever imagined.
“I competed against a kid from Harvard, and I won. For the first time in my life I thought I might be smart.”
“I transferred to Converse my sophomore year,” she said. Meagan is a loving and lovable person who soon made lots of friends. She explained, “Two of my best friends Erin and Becca Poston, were on Model League. My senior year, they asked me to join. I didn’t think I could do it. I wasn’t smart enough and I certainly didn’t know anything about the Middle East. After the first practice, I was scared to death. But Dr. Dunn, Casey Addis, and Erin and Becca took me under their wings. They taught me how to learn all I needed to know about the Middle East and in the process they helped me find my voice. I went to Boston and competed against a kid from Harvard, and I won. I had no idea I could do that. I started to believe in myself. For the first time in my life I thought I might be smart. More importantly, I had found my voice. I had learned how to articulate my thoughts.”
After graduation, Meagan stayed on at Converse to earn her MAT in early childhood education. As an award-winning first-grade teacher, she acts on her vision every day—to help young children grow, learn, and believe in themselves.
