Moseley Chamber Music Series Opens Oct. 7 with Jerusalem Quartet

The Friends of the Petrie School of Music at Converse College announce the 31st season of the Carlos Moseley Chamber Music Series, featuring four concerts by world-renowned musicians. All of the concerts are followed by champagne receptions that offer guests the opportunity to meet and talk with the performers. Season subscriptions are open to the public and are available online.

The season opens Oct. 7 with the Moseley Series debut of one of the world’s great string quartets, THE JERUSALEM QUARTET. Another Moseley Series debut follows, as we welcome, on November 11, a group that in just a few short years has earned a sparkling reputation, THE MANHATTAN PIANO TRIO.

Spartanburg audiences know pianist ANNA STOYTCHEVA from her performances with the American Chamber Players, but the dazzling Bulgarian virtuoso will play a solo recital on March 3, with a program that will include Maurice Ravel’s breathtaking Gaspard de la Nuit.

There’s not a Baroque group anywhere that can compare to the spectacular ENSEMBLE CAPRICE. They brought the house down when they played for us in 2011, and they promise to do it again when they return—this time with guest soprano Shannon Mercer—to close our season on April 21.

Hailed by The Strad as “one of the young, yet great quartets of our time,” the Jerusalem Quartet has garnered international acclaim for its rare combination of passion and precision. The ensemble has won audiences the world over, both in concert and on their recordings for the Harmonia Mundi label.

“For more than a century, starting in 1895 with the first May Festival, our modest-sized city of Spartanburg has been a destination for many of the world’s greatest musical artists,” said Moseley Series artistic director Miles Hoffman. “Spartanburg native Carlos Moseley, a man who, in his time, knew and worked with more great musicians than we could possibly catalogue, certainly knew what music meant to his home town, and it means so much to us that we can continue to honor his legacy—and now his memory. I can only think that Carlos would have been thrilled with this season’s line-up: a brilliant young piano trio, a stunning solo pianist, one of the world’s great string quartets, and a Baroque ensemble that astonished our subscribers and brought the house down on their first visit to the Series. Variety and virtuosity—it’s a pretty exciting mix, and these are concerts that I just can’t wait to hear.”

Subscriptions to the Moseley series and additional donations to the Friends of the Petrie School of Music provide support for Converse music students and make possible an array of education activities by Moseley Series artists. These activities include master classes and open rehearsals at Converse, as well as programs at local high schools.
