Basketball Team Perseveres Following Accident

The Converse Valkyries basketball team was involved in an automobile accident on their way to play Coker College yesterday, February 10, at 3:15 PM. The accident occurred on Hwy 15 in Bishopville, SC and 9 athletes were taken to Carolina Pines Medical Center to be checked for injuries. None of the injuries are severe, but the team physician is checking each team member again today to insure their well-being.
The team returned safely to campus late last night after all were released from the hospital. No charges were filed in the accident.
“True to Valkyries spirit, the team rallied around one another and exhibited great strength and a positive outlook throughout their experience yesterday,” said President Betsy Fleming. “Also true to our strong community spirit, Joy Couch Director of Intercollegiate Athletics traveled to Hartsville to support the team’s return to Converse, where they were greeted about 11 pm last night with warm hugs from Dean Molly, Rhonda Mingo, Jodi Strehl and me.”
Converse is grateful to our friends at Coker College, who were helpful in arranging transportation back to Spartanburg and in hosting those athletes who were released from the hospital earlier in the evening.
An announcement will be made later today about the status of their next game, scheduled for Saturday against Queens College in Charlotte. “We are thrilled to have our students and coaches safely back home at Converse,” said Fleming.
