Scott Fogarty Set To Lead Valkyries Soccer Team
Director of Athletics Jennifer Bell announced on Tuesday, Aug. 13 that Scott Fogarty has been named the newest coach of the Converse College soccer program. Fogarty brings a wealth of knowledge to the Purple and Gold and will look to hit the ground running with preseason just around the corner.
“We are more than excited about the future of our soccer program with Scott as our next leader,” said Bell. “We are fortunate to have found someone with such a strong background, as he has accomplished quite a bit throughout his career, and we have no doubt he will be successful as a Valkyrie.”
I’m looking forward to carrying Converse’s “family” atmosphere forward and instilling that within the team culture.
Fogarty joins the Valkyries after one season at the University of Maine-Fort Kent. UMFK is a powerhouse within the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), reaching the finals at the national tournament nine consecutive years, winning seven of those. After several years of decline in roster size due to retention and recruiting within the program, Fogarty was able to rebuild the roster to its largest anticipated number since 2016 in just three months. Fogarty also implemented a stronger academic accountability system for the players while providing a more promising team culture.
“I want to thank Jennifer Bell for this opportunity,” said Fogarty. “I am very excited to be here and getting to meet the team in the coming days. Everyone during the interview process was very friendly and embodied the “family” atmosphere that is evident here. I’m looking forward to carrying that forward and instilling that within the team culture.”
Prior to Fort Kent Fogarty was at Central Christian College in McPherson, KS where he served as Head Women’s Soccer Coach for five seasons (2014-2018). While at Central Christian, Fogarty turned around a struggling program that was one of the lowest ranking teams in the NAIA, with an RPI ranking in the bottom-10 of the NAIA for seven years in a row. In only his second season, Fogarty led them to a 20-win season (one of only four NAIA teams in the country to reach 20 wins). Fogarty averaged more than 10-wins a season while at Central and saw them reach the NCCAA National Tournament three times in his five years, after the program had failed to reach the national tournament since 2001 and had failed to appear in the post-season in any form since 2008. They reached the Final Four in 2015. His Central teams broke a number of program records, including Most Wins (20), Fewest Losses (6), Most Goals (69), Fewest Goals Allowed (19), Most Shutouts (10), Longest Win-Streak (7), Longest Unbeaten Streak (10), Highest Ranking (#7 NCCAA), and National Tournament Finish (4th Place). His teams garnered 5 NCCAA All-Americans and 20 NCCAA All-Region recipients, while also receiving recognition for 13 NAIA All-Conference nods and two NAIA All-Region selections. For his efforts, Fogarty was twice named Coach of the Year for NCCAA All-Region and collected an NAIA Conference Coach of the Year. He was twice named Central Christian College Coach of the Year as well.
2013 saw Fogarty join the coaching staff of the BuxMont Torch FC, a semi-professional team competing in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL). As the Head Assistant Coach, Fogarty was directly in-charge of working with the midfielders, an area of the team that saw two players sign professional contracts following their stint with BuxMont Torch. His lone season with the club still ranks as one of the best and most productive seasons for the Torch. He left the club after accepting the job at Central Christian College.
Before his time at Central Christian College, Fogarty led the men’s soccer program at his alma mater, Cairn University from 2010-2013. He inherited a very young and inexperienced team in his first season but managed to lead the program to the NCCAA National Tournament. That team fell one penalty-shootout away from making a Final Four appearance. His teams at Cairn also garnered several All-American and All-Region selections, including several Player of the Year honorees. Under his guidance, Cairn produced six NCCAA All-Americans, 12 NCCAA All-Region, and 12 NCAA Div. III All-Conference recipients. Fogarty was named the NCCAA Region Coach of the Year in 2011 & 2012. After only four seasons, Fogarty left Cairn as the third-winningest coach in the programs 60-year history.
Before reaching the collegiate coaching ranks, Fogarty spent time working with Soccer Performance International, a company that specializes in professional soccer education and development among both players and coaches. Additionally, he served as a head coach within the Princeton FC travel soccer club and worked on staff with the Cairn women’s soccer team as a student-assistant during his collegiate days. His first coaching job came at Denbigh Baptist Christian School in Newport News, Virginia where he ran the girls’ varsity and boys’ JV programs.
He holds his NSCAA National Diploma, College Coach and Professional Development Certificate, Goalkeeper Level 1 License, and USSF ‘D’ License.
As a player, he was a four-year standout and two-year captain for Cairn University during his playing days. Fogarty was named First Team All-Conference for the North Eastern Athletic Conference and a four-time NSCAA First Team All-American. He twice earned All-Tournament recognition at the NCCAA National Tournament. Following Fogarty’s senior campaign he was selected as the recipient for the Wayne C. Fink Award, an honor presented annually to the student-athlete that brings the highest level of regional and national attention to the athletic program of Cairn University. He was also voted Team MVP twice.
Scott graduated from Cairn University in 2005 with his B.S. in Biblical Studies. He and his wife Mary Beth have one child, a son, Shea Daniel Fogarty.
