Converse Tennis Stages Comeback to Overcome Lees-McRae
Spartanburg, S.C.— After dropping all three doubles matches and trailing 4-1 after the first two singles matches finished, Converse College won the remaining four singles matches to defeated Lees-McRae College 5-4 in Banner Elk, NC. With the win, Converse improves to 7-9.
Converse will face St. Andrews on Saturday with a berth into the CVAC Tournament at stake. With a win on Saturday, Converse will qualify for the CVAC Tennis Tournament for the first time in school history.
In the #1 Doubles spot, Converse’s Ive Jardim and Rachel Wilkes held a late lead but ultimately conceded the match in a tie break set 9-8 (6). Tina Rohner and Rhett Smodic fell 8-4 in the #2 spot while Lee Cantey and Kelsey Lambdin lost 8-1 in #3 Doubles spot.
In the singles matches, Converse turned up the intensity to stage an improbable comeback. Jenna Simpson earned the Bobcats’ only point in the singles stage with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rachel Wilkes. From that point on, the match was all Converse. Rohner won her match in the #1 slot 6-4, 6-3. Jardim defeated Ashley Mayers in the #2 spot. Smodic and Cantey also won in two sets in the #4 and #5 matches respectively. Lambdin dropped the first set before 2-6 before winning the next two sets 6-4 each to complete the impressive comeback.
Converse match this Saturday against St. Andrews is schedule to start at 1 pm.
