Spartanburg, S.C.— The Converse tennis team defeated the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College 7-2 on Thursday afternoon. The All-Stars won 2 of 3 doubles matches and 5 of 6 singles matches to claim the 7-2 win.
Tina Rohner and Rhett Smodic starting the winning with an 8-2 victory over the duo of Jennifer Binney and Bekay Rhoney in the #2 Doubles match. The freshman pair of Lee Cantey and Kelsey Lambdin defeated the Bears’ Mary Hulet Ketterman and Amanda Hunsucker in the #3 Doubles match. Ive Jardim and Rachel Wilkes fell 8-3 to L-R’s Kate Meiners and Kelli Ball.
Rohner and Jardim won the #1 and #2 singles matches in two straight sets. Lenoir-Rhyne’s sole singles point came in the #3 slot when Jennifer Binney defeated Rachel Wilkes 6-1, 6-3.
Cantey won the #5 spot in two sets as well, 6-3, 6-1. Smodic dropped the first set 6-1 before storming back and claiming the second set 6-2. The Bears’ Kelli Ball tried to fight back in the third set but fell short as Smodic won the third set 10-6.
Converse’s Lambdin fell in the first set as well 6-2. Lambdin and Hunsucker would go back and forth but in the end, Lambdin came out on top winning the last two sets 7-5 and 10-7.
The All-Stars will take the courts again on Monday when they return to CVAC action. Converse will pay host to Limestone College for a 3:00 pm match on Monday afternoon.
