Spartanburg, S.C.— St. Andrews’ Karen Foggie drained two free throw with nine seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Knights over Converse College 86-85. With the loss, the All-Stars fall to 4-22. St. Andrews improves to 14-6.
After the All-Stars jumped out to a 7-2 lead, the Knights responded with an 8-0 run. Trailing by two points, Converse went on a 13-2 run to take a nine point lead with 9:40 to play in the first half. St. Andrews chipped away at the deficit and regained the lead courtesy of a Foggie 3-pointer. Foggie scored a team high 26 points for the Knights. The lead would change hands five more times in the final three minutes of the half. St. Andrews ultimately took a 39-37 lead into the locker room.
Converse wasted no time erasing the half time deficit. Carla Kantara scored two of her game high 28 points to tie the game at 39-39. Kathlyn McClain’s steal and ensuing lay-up gave the All-Stars the lead again. The lead exchanged hand a few more time before Converse took control of the game and built a 7-point lead with just over 11 minutes to play. After a 10-3 run, the Knights tied the game at 59-59 just two minutes later. Converse answered to reclaim the lead. Although the Knights tied the game two more times, they could not surpass the All-Stars. With less than three minutes to play in the game, Foggie hit two free throws to give the Knights a one point lead at 74-73. St. Andrews was able to maintain the narrowest of leads until McClain nailed a three pointer with 23 seconds to play and gave the home team a 78-77 lead. With only four seconds on the clock, the All-Stars fouled the Knights’ Danielle Norman. Norman drained the first but was unable to convert of the second attempt, subsequently forcing overtime.
In the overtime, McClain started the scoring with a three pointer to give the All-Stars the early lead. The Knights answered by taking a one point lead at 82-81 with within the first minute of overtime. The two teams were tied twice in the extra stanza including being knotted at 84. With 1:42 to play, Kantara drained a free throw to give the All-Stars a slight advantage. However, with nine seconds remaining in overtime, the All-Stars again fouled sending the Knights to the line with a chance to take the lead. St. Andrews’ Foggie made good on both attempts to steal the win for the visitors. The All-Stars last second effort fell just short.
The All-Stars will take to the floor this Thursday when North Greeneville comes to town.
