SECOND HALF SURGE PACES TOPPERS TO 74-50 WIN OVER CONVERSE
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — The West Liberty women’s basketball team shot a sizzling 71 percent in the second half to defeat Converse 74-50 Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena in day two action of the 2006 Ferguson Enterprises Lady Pioneer Classic. The tournament is hosted by Tusculum College.
West Liberty head coach Lynn Ullom recorded his 301st victory to tie the all-time State of West Virginia women’s collegiate record with former WVU coach Kitty Blakemore.
The Lady Toppers (2-0) were led by Lauren Russell’s 16 points. Russell shot 7-for-9 from the floor, while Charity Street and Lena Kalvans added 13 markers each in the victory. Street added seven rebounds and five assists, while Lisa Perry accounted for a game-high 10 assists.
Converse (0-3) was paced by the efforts of Lauren Haloulos, who tallied 15 points and recorded a game-high four steals.
West Liberty shot 56.3 percent from the field, including 15-of-21 in the second half (71.4%).
The All-Stars were led on the boards by Stephanie Whitaker as she hauled in eight rebounds.
Street and Kalvans were both named to the All-Classic team for the Lady Toppers.
