Converse Falls to Newberry
Spartanburg, SC — Four Newberry players reached double digits in points as the Indians defeated Converse College 77-41. Newberry, who advanced to the NCAA National Tournament last season, improves to 4-0 on the season. The All-Stars drop to 0-5.
Sydney Brown opened the game up with a 3-pointer to give the All-Stars a short lived lead. Despite trailing the better part of the first half, Converse was able to keep the game within reach. With under 6 minutes to play in the first half Converse trailed by only 8 points. Then Newberry’s Tonique Frasier forced a turnover and scored on the lay up, which sparked a 13-3 run by the Indians. That run eventually turned into a 20 point lead for the visitors.
In the second half, poor shooting continued to plaque the All-Stars. Converse shot 17% in the second half, including going 0 for 9 on three-pointers.
Lauren Mueller led the All-Stars with 8 points. Mueller also picked up 5 rebounds and a block. Carla Kantara and Sydney Brown each added 6 points. Kantara recorded 5 rebounds.
Carnicha Bellinger and Frasier each had a game high 14 points. Fraiser had 7 rebounds while Bellinger had 6. Breenen Long had 12 points on the night including 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Tosha Goodman added 10 points and 5 rebounds to the effort. The Indians shot 55% for the night.
Converse returns to action following Thanksgiving as they travel to Pfeiffer on Saturday afternoon.
