GAFFNEY, S.C.- The Limestone College women’s soccer team rolled to an 8-0 win over Converse College on Thursday afternoon in CVAC action. Limestone improves to 7-5-5 overall (5-3-2 CVAC) while Converse ends its season at 2-16 overall (1-10 CVAC).
Limestone’s Ashley Vaughan (Pickering, Ontario, Canada) scored the first goal of the match with the assist going to Lee Cribb (Spartanburg, S.C.) in the third minute. The Lady Saints’ second goal came from a header by Ashley Dugan (Severna Park, Md.) off a corner kick by Erin Hoffman (Fort Collins, Colo.) in the seventh minute.
“In the first half Converse really came out and played well,” said Limestone head coach Benji Walton. “They really attacked and fought very hard.”
The Lady Saints didn’t score again until the 54th minute as Cribb put Limestone up 3-0 off a ball from Hoffman. Alexis Brothers (Charleston, S.C.) flicked the ball into the goal two minutes later as Kristina Gaylord (Kendall, N.Y.) picked up the assist. Cribb scored her second goal of the match in the 57th minute as she chipped Gaylord’s passed ball past Converse’s keeper. Dugan brought the score up to 6-0 with another header from a corner kick by Hoffman. Vaughan and Hoffman each had an unassisted goal in the last minutes of the game to seal the 8-0 win.
“In the second half we regrouped, found our game, and played more of our style of soccer,” pointed out Walton.
“Erin Hoffman came up big today feeding the ball for us and had a big goal at the end of the match,” Walton continued. “Ashley Dugan stepped up for us on defense and the attacking side with her two goals. Our seniors really raised the level of play to lead us to a big win.”
Converse goalkeeper Kaitlyn Price had 10 saves for the match, including a penalty kick save in the 40th minute. Liz Eichhorn (Fort Collins, Colo.) only faced five shots for the Lady Saints while Brittany Clarke (Goose Creek, S.C.) had Limestone’s only save for the game.
“Now we have a tough match against St. Andrews to get ready for,” Walton said.
Limestone hosts St. Andrews on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Lady Saints final regular season CVAC game.
