Limestone Rallies to Defeat Converse
Spartanburg, SC — After trailing 2-0, the Saints of Limestone College came back to defeat Converse in CVAC Volleyball action. With the win Limestone improves to 18-8 (12-2 CVAC) and the All-Stars fall to 14-8 (9-4 CVAC).
Converse fell behind early in game 1 trailing 6-1. However they would quickly erase that deficit to take a 7-6 lead. Leading 12-11, the All-Stars blew the game open with an 8-point run. They would win the game 30-24.
Game 2 would be much closer. The two teams began by exchanging points with neither team pulling away. Limestone held a narrow lead at 13-9. Converse put together a small run and took the lead for the first time in the game. After tying the game twice, Limestone would again pull ahead at 23-21. The lead would be short-lived as the All-Stars tied the game again at 23 before taking the lead for good at 26-24. Converse would win game 2 by the score of 30-27.
The teams would trade points to start off game 3. Limestone would nurse a small 3 point lead at 8-5. They would hold that lead until Converse eventually caught and passed the Saints to take a 19-17 lead. The lead would not last long for the home team as Limestone tied the game at 19-19. The lead would change hands three more times before Limestone took a 26-24 lead that gave them the cushion they needed. The Saints went on to win game 3 by the score of 30-26.
Game 4 would mirror game 3 with the two teams exchange the lead numerous time before the Saints finally pulled away and forced a fifth game with a 30-27 win.
Limestone would carry the momentum into the fifth stanza. The Saints jumped out to an early 7-1 lead. However, the All-Stars rallied back to take the lead at 10-9. The Saints would again battle back and take an 11-10 lead they would never relinquish. Limestone won game 5 by the score of 15-13 and sweeps the season series.
Melanie Wallace led the way offensively for the All-Stars with 20 kills. Monica Wallace and Lauren Mueller each added 11 kills. Mueller also added a team high 6 blocks. Sally Crossley recorded 33 digs. Michelle Sloan and Melanie Wallace added 25 and 23 respectively. Baye Williams had 3 aces on the night. Brittany Ogez dished out 32 assists.
The Saints’ attack was led by Melissa Thomas with 23 kills. Amber added 21 while Alison Hamilton had 10 kills. Hamilton led the team in digs with 23, one better than Julie Oleson. Hamilton led the Saints in two other categories as well; assists with 45 and aces with 4. Courtney Taotozi added 2 aces for Limestone.
The All-Stars will begin a four game road trip this Sunday as they travel to Mt. Olive College for a 4:00 pm match. Converse will play the following day against Barton.
