Converse Sweeps Queens in CVAC Volleyball
Spartanburg, SC — Converse College defeated Queens College 3-0 (30-22, 30-18, 30-26) at the Tom and Tracy Hannah Gym on Senior Night. With the win, Converse improves to 19-8 and 14-5 in CVAC play. Queens drops to 1-24 and 1-17 in CVAC play.
Fittingly on senior night, it would be the Converse seniors who paved the way to victory. Lauren Mueller, a senior from Foley, AL, had a match high 14 kills. Michelle Sloan, a senior from Spartanburg, led the All-Stars with 14 digs. Brittnay Ogez, the senior setter from Tulsa, OK, led the team with 36 assists.
Game 1 started with the two teams neck and neck. With the score tied at 6, Converse was able to open up a five point lead. The lead would quickly grow to seven with the score at 20-13. From there, Converse and Queens merely exchanged points as the All-Stars took game 1 by eight points.
Game 2 would not be as close. Converse jumped out to a 7-0 lead before conceding a point. The All-Stars never looked back and won the game soundly by a score 30-18.
In the third game, Queens would get close but eventually would fall. Holding on to a 3 opint lead at 9-6, the All-Stars turned up the pressure and went on a 7 point run to take a 13-9 lead. The Royals would mount a run of their own and steal the lead back at 16-14. The game would see seven more ties before Converse took the lead for good at 25-24. The All-Stars won game 3 by the score of 30-26.
Queens University was led by Veronica Arenander with 11 kills. Keatin McKenizie added 6 kills and Laleh Threeths had 5. Ebony Turner led the Royals in digs with 37. Tammy Pierce and Arenander each added 18. Arenander also led the team in aces with two. Kat Gladstone had 20 assists for Queens University.
Mueller led the All-Stars offense with 14 kills. Monica Wallace had 10 kills while Sloan added 8. Melanie Wallace added 13 digs to Sloan’s team high 14. Melanie Wallace had 6 aces and Baye Williamson added 3.
The third place All-Stars travel to Banner Elk, NC tomorrow night. They will do battle with CVAC leading Lees-McRae at 7:00 pm. The Bobcats currently hold a two game lead over Converse College. The All-Stars will wrap up the regular season with a home match this Saturday against Belmont Abbey. The match time is set at 2:00 pm.
