Converse Sweeps Anderson
Spartanburg, SC — Converse College defeated Anderson Tuesday night in CVAC volleyball action (30-26, 36-34, 30-26). Converse not only swept the game but also the season series with the Trojans. Converse improves to 13-7 (8-3 CVAC) and moves into a tie for 3rd. Anderson falls to 13-12 (7-4 CVAC).
In game one, the All-Stars started strong by getting out to a 7-1 lead. Although Converse would never relinquish the lead, the Trojans would battle back throughout the game. Anderson was able to widdle away at the lead and get within 3 points at 12-9. However, the All-Stars would again pull away with the strength of a 7 point run to take a 19-9 lead. Not to be outdone, the Trojans responded with a 7 point run of their own. That would be as close as the Trojans would get. The teams finished the game trading points and Converse eventually won 30-26.
Game 2 would carry all the excitement of game 1. The game saw 24 ties and needed to go to 36 to decide a winner. The biggest lead held by either team was 2 points. The longest run by either team was 4 points. Anderson seemed poised for victory serving at 29-28, however the All-Stars were up the challenge. Actually, the Trojans held game point on four separate occasions, but the All-Stars answered the call each and every time and eventually won the marathon game by the score of 36-34.
The two South Carolina schools would play a close third game as well. At 8-8, the lead had already changed hands 4 times. Converse’s 3 point run to take an 11-8 would be all they needed to claim victory as the teams traded points for the rest of the game. Despite the fact that Anderson got within one point six times, they were never able to surpass the All-Stars. Converse won game 3 and the match 30-26.
The All-Stars were led offensively by Lauren Mueller and Melanie Wallace who had 15 and 13 kills respectively. Monica Wallace added 8 kills. The Wallace sisters also combined for 31 digs, 17 for Melanie and 14 for Monica. However, it was Sally Crossley who led the way with 22 digs. Brittney Ogez served up 3 aces and Baye Williams added 2. Ogez also dished out 25 assists in first two games. Allison Ralston had 14 assist in game 3.
The Trojans got 12 kills from Amanda Edwards and Leanna Willis. Jessica Pedrick led the team in digs with 21 and in assists with 33. Edwards and Willis had 19 and 18 digs respectively. Pedrick and Beth Lawson each registered an ace on the night.
Converse will play host to St. Andrews Presbyterian College this Friday at 6:30 pm. The All-Stars defeated the Saints 3-1 in their first meeting of the season.
