Converse Finishes 17th at Eye-Opener Invitational
Spartanburg, SC — The Converse College Cross Country team finished 17th out of 24 teams in the Eye Opener Invitational at Milliken Corporate Park. The All-Stars’ young squad finished 8th out of 11 CVAC teams in the meet. This was the first meet of the season for the All-Stars. Milligan College, an NAIA school located in Johnson City, TN, won Saturday’s event.
The All-Stars top finisher was sophomore Sarah Powell. The Enoree, SC native ran the 5k race in 21:21. Powell’s time was good for 33rd place finish and she was 12th overall finisher of CVAC runners. Betsy Ruppert was the next All-Star runner to cross the finish line at the 21:38 mark. Her time was the 19th best among CVAC runners and placed her 45th overall. Senior Mary Cloonan completed the race in 21:57 which was good for 58th place. Freshman Julie Siles and sophomore Morgan Osburn were the last two runners to score for the All-Stars, finishing 105 and 156 respectively. Siles ran a 24:08 time while Osburn completed the 3.1 mile trip in 30:01.
Freshman Jennifer Brown finished right behind her teammate in 157th, running the race in 30:30.
“Sarah ran very well for us,” said Molly Duesterhaus who led the Al-Stars in Saturday’s meet. “I am also proud of our newcomers. Morgan and Jennifer both ran strong in their first collegiate event.”
The young team, which is comprised of only one senior, five sophomores, and a freshman, will look to build on this showing as they travel to Rock Hill, SC for the Winthrop Invitational.
