Barton Routs Converse
Spartanburg, SC — Barton College scored seven second half goals to defeat Converse 10-1 in CVAC soccer action this afternoon. Converse drops to 2-5 (1-3 CVAC) on the season. Barton improves to 4-2 (1-1 CVAC).
The Bulldogs were able to get on the scoreboard early, when Dillon Sauls netted a volley from 25 yards out to beat Converse’s freshman keeper Kaitlyn Price. Sauls goal came in the 4th minute. In the 20th minute, Tara Davis would begin working on her hat trick. Davis would neatly tuck away a shot off a pass from Ashley Ernst. With 8:27 left in the first half, Allie Wilkerson would give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead that they would take into the half.
After the intermission, Wilkerson would pick up where she left off. She would complete a natural hat trick by finding the back of the net in the 50th minute and again in the 59th minute. Davis would pick up her second of three goals one minute later when she blasted a shot from the left side into the back post to give Barton a 6-0 lead.
Converse junior Ashley Carry would keep the home side from getting shutout in the 63rd minute. After making a nice solo run to beat a number of Bulldog defenders, Carry would knock in her on rebound, which had hit the post.
Davis would complete her hat trick in the 64th minute to build the Bulldog lead back to 6 goals. In an effort to show how much offense they were capable of, the Bulldogs would score 3 goals in the final 10 minutes. Less than two minutes after being reinserted in the match, starter Jordan Carter would get her name on the score sheet at the 80:15 mark. With 3:10 remaining in the game, Eboni Nichols scored the Bulldogs’ ninth goal of the match. Not yet finished with the scoring and only 21 seconds left on the clock, Ashley Ernst became the first non-starter to register a goal on the afternoon and give Barton a 10-1 victory.
“I am actually pleased with my team’s effort. They showed a lot of heart, unfortunately we ran into a very good team that showed no mercy,” commented Coach Diaz on his team. “We are a very young team. We started 2 freshman and 2 sophomores in the defense who learned a lot today.”
Converse will take to the field again when they travel to Anderson University this Wednesday for an evening match at 7:00 pm.
