All-Stars Defeats St. Andrews
LAURINBURG, N.C.-St. Andrews Presbyterian College held leads in all four games, but visiting Converse College rallied in the first, third, and fourth to pull out a 3-1 (30-28, 22-30, 30-26, 32-30) Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference volleyball victory on Friday in Harris Court.
The All Stars rose to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the CVAC while the Knights dropped to 9-8 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
St. Andrews held a late 27-24 advantage in the first, but a 6-1 run at the end gave Converse a 30-28 win. SAPC responded with a solid second game in which they led most of the way. Junior Tara Lemieux (Panama City, Fla.) ripped a kill to end the second frame, 30-22, and tie the match at one apiece. Converse regained the lead with a 30-26 third set. The All Stars pulled out to a late 26-23 lead in the fourth but a late charge and 7-3 run catapulted the Knights to within one point, 30-29, of sending the match into a decisive fifth game. However, Converse fought back with three straight points to end the contest, 32-30.
Senior Brittney Ogez (Tulsa, Okla.) led the All Stars with 29 digs and four service aces. Junior Monica Wallace (San Antonio, Texas) posted eight kills and four blocks while senior Lauren Mueller (Foley, Ala.) had a team-high seven blocks while adding six kills. Freshman Sally Crossley (Campobello, S.C.) and senior Michelle Sloan (Spartanburg, S.C.) made 26 and 17 digs, respectively. Senior Sarah Javdan-Inalloo (Pickens, S.C.) finished with eight kills. Lemieux finished with 14 kills and .300 hitting percentage to lead the Knights. Junior Lindsey Stansbury (Morgan City, La.) and freshman Galina Podolsky (Raleigh, N.C.) both spiked 14 kills. Stansbury also totaled 15 digs and four aces while Podolsky had six total blocks.
Junior Erin Haugen (Fort Mill, S.C.) made a team-high 24 digs while freshman Jaime Hayes (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) had a season-high 14 digs. Senior Lauren McManus (Raleigh, N.C.) had 23 digs and classmate Kim Harper (Boca Raton, Fla.) supplied 40 assists and 14 digs.
St. Andrews visits CVAC foe Belmont Abbey on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.; while Converse travels to CVAC opponent Coker on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
