Converse keeps Lenoir Rhyne close until late
Spartanburg, SC – In the consolation game of the Allstate Insurance Women’s Basketball Classic at the G.B. Hodge Center Friday, Shannon Jones finished with a double-double, tallying 18 points and 14 rebounds, to lead Lenoir-Rhyne to the 68-44 victory over Converse.
Converse kept the game close, taking a 21-20 lead with 7:15 to play in the first half, and heading into halftime trailing 32-27. However, in the second half, Lenoir-Rhyne used a 16-4 run to open a 17-point lead with 11:37 to play in the game and the All-Stars never mounted a challenge the rest of the game.
Leah Barrier tallied 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals for the Bears, while Kalah Wilson added 12 points and four boards. Sydney Brown (Myrtle Beach, SC)led Converse with nine points and two steals, while Lauren Mueller (Foley, AL) tallied a solid eight points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots for the All-Stars.
The respite for Coach Phillips and the All-Stars is short-lived as they face Queens University this coming Tuesday when they travel to Charlotte for a 6:30pm tip-off. The following night they return to the friendly confines of the Hannah Gymnasium with their first home match for over a month against Presbyterian College. The game is set to begin at 6:00pm.
