Converse drops heartbreaker to Lees McRae
Spartanburg, SC – With an 11-7 lead in the fifth set and a timeout called by the opposition, the Converse All-Stars looked set to end Lees McRae’s unbeaten CVAC streak at nine games. However, after the timeout Lees McRae went on an 8-1 run and ended all hopes of Converse pulling a major upset eventually winning 3-2.
For the All-Stars the defensive ever-present Lauren Mueller (Foley, AL) shone again with six solo-blocks and added ten kills. Monica Wallace (San Antonio, TX) was the offensive leader for Converse with 17 kills with many coming at pivotal moments in the first and third sets and also contributed 33 digs in the losing effort.
The Lees McRae Bobcats were led by the impressive Lacie Smith (Knoxville, TN) who amassed 22 kills and 3 solo-blocks in the win. At the end of the day it would prove to be the defense of Lees McRae that would shine through with Bridget Thornton (Owings Mill, MD) and Smith combining for 38 and 32 kills respectively as Lees McRae improved to 16-8 and 10-0 in the CVAC Conference.
Converse returns to action tomorrow as the host another CVAC powerhouse Mount Olive at 2pm in the Hannah Gymnasium while Lees McRae hosts St. Andrews on Tuesday.
