Converse volleyball falls just short of history
PFEIFFER VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS CONVERSE 3-2
In a great college volleyball match Monday night in Misenheimer, the Falcons of Pfeiffer pulled off a 3-2 win over the All-Stars from Converse. It was a tough close fight all night for both teams. In the first game, strong serving by Brittany Poole (FR Sparta, NC) helped lead Pfeiffer to an 8-0 advantage. Great hitting by Vera Taylor (SO San Clemente, CA) propelled Pfeiffer and when Morgan Liebert (FR Naples, FL) hit two straight aces the Falcons had a 24-12 lead. Monica Wallace led Converse on a 7-0 run to cut into the lead but Pfeiffer held on 30-27.
In game two it was nip and tuck all the way. Leslie Shain and Wallace helped Converse build a 12-9 advantage. Strong play from Taylor and Sarah Beth Hobson (SR Asheboro, NC) kept Pfeiffer in it. Finally a kill by Taylor gave Pfeiffer a 32-30 victory.
Game three was dominated by Lauren Mueller of Converse. The junior with both her serving and net play led Converse to a 30-18 win. Heather Klein (JR Charlotte, NC) made some great plays for Pfeiffer but it wasn’t enough.
Game four from Pfeiffer’s point of view could be called the “Sarah Beth Show”. The senior really stepped up her game. She had several incredible digs and outstanding kills. Nicole Cummings (SO Sanford, NC) also had some outstanding plays. In the end Converse pulled out a tough 30-27 win to set up game five.
In the fifth game Pfeiffer rebounded and came out strong. Led by Cummings the Falcons jumped to a 7-2 lead. Even strong hitting by Wallace, from Converse, could not stop Pfeiffer. In the end Pfeiffer proved too much and won the deciding game 15-7.
Coach Guiliano of Pfeiffer said after the game,” The team did a great job of pulling together for the fifth game. After the second game Converse picked up their play and we had a slight let down. We did a good job tonight of taking advantage of their mistakes. The biggest key to our victory was the team staying together and not folding when Converse came back. I am very proud of them.”
The Falcons will play again Wednesday, September 7th, when they host Barton College at 7:00 pm.
