All-Stars beat St. Andrews in 2OT
Lauringburg, NC – For the second time this season the Converse All-Stars faced double overtime with the scored tied 1-1 with St. Andrews in a quest to win their first CVAC Conference game in school history. The first was a painful 1-0 defeat at the hands of Lees McRae but freshman Brittnay Moreno (Seneca, SC) would ensure the drought was over with a 25 yard blast that dipped just underneath the crossbar to give Converse a well earned 2-1 victory.
Converse came out firing and Sam Chapman (Spartanburg, SC) would give them the lead with only 3:26 gone after she fired a curling shot to the top right corner from 20 yards. The All-Stars would then dominate the rest of the half only to misfire on numerous clear-cut chances that would have effectively killed the game.
The lack of lethal finishing would come back to haunt Converse as St. Andrews tied the game up with 13 minutes to play in the second half with a well taken finish from Myra Miller (Atlanta, GA) to send the game into overtime and forcing Converse to play on without captain Samoria Roundtree (Shaw AFB) who injured her ankle in the last few minutes of regulation.
Converse would receive a big boost from the bench with the play of freshmen Holly Seppala (Greenville, SC) who played both overtime periods and was instrumental in the winning goal. With the game just over a minute into double overtime, Moreno sliced in from the left side of midfield, took a touch by a defender and unleashed an unstoppable shot that would give the keeper no chance and win the game for the All-Stars at the 101:47 mark. It was Moreno’s first goal of her career and would mark a historic day for Converse Soccer as they secured their first CVAC Conference win.
Converse returns to action Wednesday as they host Anderson College at 4pm while St. Andrews has a quick turn around when they host Barton Tuesday.
