Converse Falls in Weekend Double Header
The All-Stars traveled to Fort Myers, FL this past weekend to take on the Florida Gulf Coast University basketball team. The two teams faced off on both Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, FGCU junior guard Ebonie Haliburton scored 17 points to lead the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team to an easy 69-36 victory over Converse College.
Haliburton was one of nine players to reach the scoring column. The Eagles jumped out to a 19-1 lead early in the game and held the All-Stars to 19% shooting in the opening half, building two leads over 30 points before settling for a 39-12 halftime advantage.
Freshman forward Jessica Hathaway had nine points while freshman forward Amber Bishko and junior guard Candy Myers added eight points each. Myers extended her consecutive game streak of made three-point field goals to 30.
The 36 points were the fewest allowed by the Eagles this season, as they held the All-Stars to just 27% percent shooting from the floor while forcing 27 turnovers.
On Sunday, FGCU junior guard Candy Myers led five players in double figures as the Eagles rolled to an 81-55 victory.
Myers connected on 5-of-10 shots from the floor, including 5-of-9 from beyond the three point arc for a game-high 16 points. Senior forward Andrea Clarke had 15 points, while junior forward Alex Kwiecinska and junior guard Megan Jones had 11 points each.
Junior forward Andrea Holbrook posted a double-double for FGCU with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
After being held to 36 points and 27 percent from the floor on Saturday, the All-Stars kept the game close in the first half before the Eagles ran out to a 36-23 lead at intermission.
Though Converse shot 54.5% from the floor in the final 20 minutes, FGCU maintained a double-digit lead throughout the half. The Eagles held a big 41-30 lead on the boards against the taller All-Stars.
Center Melissa Bunce had 15 points to lead Converse (3-21), while forward Lauren Mueller had 12 points and guard Melissa Ballard had 11 points.
The All-Stars will be back in action on Saturday, February 19th when they travel to Misenheimer, NC to take on Pfeiffer College
