Converse defeated Coker, 6-3
The All-Star tennis team was victorious in their match yesterday against Coker College, winning 6-3.
Double action proved nerve racking as all three teams were losing and it looked like the Cobras would take a 3-0 lead going into singles. But the there was the comeback. At number 1, Tina Rohner and Ive Jardim took a slight lead but then let the Coker pair of Santos/Hickman back in to reach 7 games all before the All-Stars sealed the win 9-7. At number two, Danielle Beck and Jenny Kile were down 5-2 before mounting a spectacular comeback against Crocker/Smith to win 8-6. At number 3, Andrea Weatherman and Virginia Jones let a 4-1 advantage slip away to the powerful strokes of Pace/Davis and ended up losing 8-5. The All-Stars took the lead going into singles, 2-1.
In singles action, Jenny Kile, playing number 4, was the first player to finish, easily defeating Pace 6-1, 6-1. Andrea Weatherman, playing number 5 and battleing numerous injuries, suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Smith. At number 1, Tina Rohner easily defeated Santos 6-1, 6-2. Danielle Beck fought hard at the number 3 spot but just couldn’t hold off Crocker, who won 6-4, 6-4. With the match at 4-3 in favor of Converse, the All-Stars cheered on their last two players, Jardim and Jones. With Jardim having lost the first set and being down in the second, Jones, at number 6, looked like she would be the All-Stars hope. Having won the first set in a tie-breaker, she pulled out the match against Konopa winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. This fifth win clenched the match victory for the All-Stars, but Jardim had to finish. Mounting a second set comeback, Jardim leveled the match at one set all. Her opponent elected to no play the third set, and Jardim’s victory was official, 5-7, 7-5, retired.
Converse, now 3-2, will travel to Tusculum College on Saturday for a 12pm match up.
