Bellinger Leads Indians to an 83-64 Victory Over The All-Stars
Newberry College freshman forward Carnicha Bellinger tallied 21 points and added eight boards to lead the Lady Pirates to an 83-64 victory over Converse College in women’s college basketball action Tuesday night.
Three players for Newberry reached double figures as the team shot 40 percent from the field for the game. The All-Stars shot 46.7% from the field, but dominated from the line shooting 77.3 percent. Newberry tallied 15 assists for the game and forced the All-Stars into 30 turnovers and it seemed to be the turnovers that cost Converse the game.
The first half was closely contested until the Indians went on a 12-3 run to pull ahead 34-25 at the 4:16 mark on a layup by freshman Ashley Marine. Converse fought back hard but the halftime lead went to Newberry, 40-33.
Newberry opened the second half strong and pushed the lead to double figures again for a 59-47 lead at the 11:50 mark on a three pointer by freshman Monica Alexander. The Indians never relinquished the lead after that and closed the victory at 83-64.
Leading the Indians was Bellinger with 21 points and 8 rebounds, while both Laura Banda and Ashley Marine had 13 points each.
Sophomore center Lauren Mueller led the All-Stars with 13 points, while both Melissa Ballard and Olivia Freda had 11 points each.
