All-Stars Fall On Senior Night
The Converse College All-Stars fell to the Shaw University Bears on Friday night in Weisiger Center 88-62. In the first eight minutes of the game, it looked as if the All-Stars might pull the one out. The defense was very active and it enabled Converse to have the lead in the beginning. However due to turnovers Shaw as able to pull ahead and take the lead. Converse kept itself in the first half by hitting 5-of 9 three-pointers and shooting 43.5%. However Shaw shot 50% from the field hitting 17-of 34 and shot 36.4% from the three-point line. The All-Stars went into the locker room at halftime trailing the Bears.
In the second half, they shot 75% from the free throw line, hitting 9-of 12. Their percentages went down, only shooting 40% from the field and 36.4% from the three-point range. The Bears shot just under 50% in the first half, shooting 48.5% from the field and shot a little better behind the three-point line shooting 38.5%. Both teams were close in rebounds. The Bears only out rebounded the All-Stars by one rebound 37 to 36. The difference in the game were the turnovers and the post play. The All-Stars had 28 turnovers to the Bears 14 turnovers. The post play was not as strong tonight, which hurt the All-Stars in the paint.
Melissa Ballard led the All-Stars with 17 points and grabbed three rebounds. Melissa was followed closely by Olivia Freda who scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Shaw’s Latasha Shipman scored a game-high of 20 points and had nine rebounds.
The All-Stars will return home on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th to host The All-Star Tournament in Spartanburg, SC at Weisiger Center. Converse will play Longwood at 8:00PM, and will play the winner or loser of the North Greenville versus University of Pittsburg at Johnstone game on Saturday.
