Converse Tennis Thinks Positively About Season
Written by Tennis Coach, Jeff Batkin
The Converse Tennis Team is off to a positive start despite losses to Queens College and Anderson College. That is because we have won more matches against teams that have beaten us over the last few years. Against Queens College we lost 7-2, but in comparison to last year against this strong team, that was two singles matches more. Tina Rohner playing at number 2 singles and Sandra Diaz, playing at number 4 singles, both won their hard fought matches.
Against Anderson College, who beat us twice last year, 9-0, 7-2, we lost a very close match 5-4. Despite losses in all three doubles matches, our singles players came through to give a commendable showing. Marcela Caceres won at number one, Tina Rohner won at number two, and Christine Galop won at number 5. The match of the day was the marathon baseline match of Sandra Diaz, who despite illness, won the first set, then lost the second set in a 7 point tiebreaker, 7-4. Because the match overall had already been decided, the last set was played as a 10 point tiebreaker. Sandra marshaled her resources and won her third set 10-3.
This early in our fall season, we are proud of the progress our tennis team is showing. Come out and support us when we play next. We play Columbia College on October 11 at 10 am at Converse.
