Textile magnate, philanthropist, community leader, builder, unabashed patriot and family man, Roger Milliken died Thursday, Dec 30, at the age of 95. During his lifetime, Milliken epitomized the tenacity of the “American Spirit” and left an indelible mark on Spartanburg and the Converse Community.
Funeral services for Milliken are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Episcopal Church of the Advent at 141 Advent St. in downtown Spartanburg. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be sent to The Noble Tree Foundation in care of The Spartanburg County Foundation, 424 E. Kennedy St., Spartanburg, SC 29302. Milliken was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Justine “Nita” Van Rensselaer Hooper, who died in 2003. He is survived by his five children, Justine “Jan” Van Rennselear Milliken Russell, Nancy Milliken, Roger Milliken Jr., David Gayley and Weston Freeman Milliken, and nine grandchildren.
