The wit of Simon is liberally mixed with a dose of pathos in “The Gingerbread Lady,” a story of lost misfits. Evy, a burned-out popular singer who is at the completion of a ten-week “drying out” period at a sanitarium. A friend of hers, her daughter and an actor acquaintance arrive to help her adjust to a rehabilitated and “normal” life style, but they wind up having the opposite effect on her. Add to the mix the arrival of a former lover who ends up giving her a black eye. A birthday party is planned for a friend, but is a complete wash-out and she eventually falls off the bandwagon… again.
Simon is the master of the one-liner and “The Gingerbread Lady,” one of his own personal favorites, is filled with them.
