Judy Jones Returns to Converse with Selected Works
The Milliken Gallery at Converse College presents an exhibit of paintings by Judy Jones. The exhibition will be on display from February 18 – March 8, 2002. A reception will be held on Thursday, February 21 from 7:00 – 8:30p.m. Jones will speak about her work (gallery talk) from 6:30-7:00p.m. Judy Jones was an Associate Professor and Chair of the Converse Art Department from 1976-1993.
This exhibit is intriguing for the fact that Judy Jones will not be displaying just recent works. She will be selecting and displaying what she considers her pivotal pieces and her strongest pieces created over the span of the past 10 years. Jones’ paintings deal with memory, intuition and female influences. Antique quilts also influence Jones’ work. An avid collector of quilts, she is intrigued by the way needlework, color, and pattern become visual metaphors for memories and layers of life. This fascination takes shape in her paintings. Jones states, “I think of my work as a visual diary. It is about the bits and pieces of life: objects, and desires, flashes of memory, shapes and colors that speak of visited places and people. It is about the things you see out of the corner of your eye, fragments of conversations and recurring thoughts. I am interested in the layering of images and what comes to the surface of the mind.”
Currently Judy Jones is a professional artist and Part-time Instructor of Drawing and Painting at the University of Georgia. She received her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degree from The University of Georgia. Jones has received many awards and has been in numerous exhibits for over 20 years. Her work is also included in many prestigious collections such as McDonalds Corporation, Oak Brook, IL; Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville, SC; South Carolina Arts Commission State Collection, Columbia, SC; and Michael Stipe, Atlanta, GA. Jones is represented by several galleries. She recently had a solo exhibition at the Blue Spiral Gallery, Asheville, NC.
The exhibit is free of charge and open to the public. The gallery is located next to the art building at Converse College and is open Monday – Friday.
