Campaign for Converse Surpasses $65 Million
On April 19, 2001, Converse College unveiled “The Campaign for Converse: Building for the Future,” a $75 million capital campaign that will touch virtually every aspect of the College. Supporting new capital projects on campus and strengthening the endowment are among the goals of the campaign. With enthusiasm, Converse supporters have embraced the campaign, giving $65.4 million to date. “Today, we celebrate the tremendous commitment the Converse family has shown, and the important investment they have made in this College,” said Nancy Oliver Gray, Converse President. “While this campaign is one of the greatest challenges in the history of the College, our supporters are showing that it also represents exciting opportunities.”
A key component of the success of Converse is the annual fund. Comprising $3 million of a $17 million annual operating budget, the annual fund provides necessary income for the College. “The annual fund enables virtually everyone-alumnae, faculty and staff members, students, parents, and friends of the College-to become significantly involved in building the future for Converse,” said William Barnet III, Chairman of the Campaign for Converse.
Across the country, charitable giving reaches its height each year in December. Many individuals, either because of the advantages of giving before the end of the tax year or the general giving mood of the holidays, choose to support their favorite causes at this time. It is this type of private support that Converse College relies heavily upon in order to fulfill its mission of preparing women to be leaders in an ever-changing world.
