Responding to Children in Our Time of Tragedy

SPARTANBURG, S.C.– In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks, Converse College is offering a free seminar from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 22 to help adults understand how to respond to children as they are being affected by these events. The presentation will be open to parents, professionals and para-professionals who provide child services or childcare. It will be held in room 200 of Carmichael Hall on the Converse College campus.

The presentation will be made by Sandra Frick-Helms, Ph.D., RN as a portion of a marriage and family therapy graduate course at Converse. Dr. Frick-Helms is an adjunct faculty member in the Marriage and Family Therapy graduate degree program at Converse College and at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. She has graciously volunteered to design Saturday’s class to address concerns of the parents and child care workers in light of the tragedy.

Dr. Frick-Helms is an APT Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor and Certified Supervisor and Professor of Child Psychotherapy and Play Therapy. She has conducted research with child survivors of Hurricane Hugo, children of battered women and physically and sexually abused children.
