Meet Addie Branen ’28: Making Her Mark On Converse In & Outside The Chemistry Lab
Written by Amanda Mathis
Converse’s Addie Branen ’28 (Nisbet Honors) of Moscow, Idaho, has been named an inaugural 2026–2027 recipient of the American Chemical Society Catalyst Scholar. This prestigious undergraduate scholarship supports the scientists of tomorrow as they use chemistry to address global challenges.
The ACS scholarship recognized the sophomore for her academic success and is designed for undergraduate students pursuing chemistry or chemistry-related fields. Students selected for the award receive $10,000 for the academic year.
Branen was surprised to learn that she was one of the students chosen.
“It is such an honor to be named an ACS Catalyst Scholar,” she said. “I’m thankful to Dr. Jennifer Hawk, and I am encouraged by many mentors who have shaped me into the student that I am today.”

As a biochemistry major, Addie has been surrounded by mentors in and outside of the classroom and credits them with strengthening both her scientific skills and career aspirations. Science has been a family affair as her grandparents were food scientists, her father is a microbiologist, and her mother is an educator.
“I can succeed at their level due to their guidance,” she said. “They have been role models for me my entire life.”
Making An Impact On Campus
Outside the lab, Addie is a shining star in another field: softball. She was named a 2026 Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete. Additionally, she is actively involved with the Converse College for Women, Nisbet Honors, and is on the Dean’s List with a GPA above 3.6.
“The science department has been so supportive of me and accommodating of my athletic schedule,” Addie reflected. “Converse is such a welcoming environment.”
