Student Health Fees and Health Insurance

Wellness

Student Health Fees

All currently enrolled, full-time, traditional undergraduate students are charged a student health fee each semester. This fee automatically appears on your bill each semester. Graduate and Converse II students are not charged a student health fee, and are not eligible for counseling or health services.

Student health fees cover the following services*:

  • Individual and group counseling services
  • Consultations with the nurse practitioner
  • Educational wellness programming

The services and procedures that are not covered by student health fees include, but are not limited to:

  • Labwork and diagnostic tests
  • Medical supplies like ace bandages and cold packs
  • Prescription medications
  • Flu shots
  • Costs associated with referral appointments with off-campus providers

*Services covered are subject to change.

Billing

Charges not covered by the fee may be paid by cash, check, credit card or they can be billed to your student account. When charges are billed to a student’s account, we do not disclose the specific services that are being billed; the charges will simply be listed as, “Student health charge.”

There is no mechanism for Converse to bill your insurance for services rendered at the Wellness Center. The fees described above must be paid at the time of the service. However, we will provide documentation to individuals who wish to seek insurance reimbursement by contacting their insurance company on their own.

Health Insurance

Please be aware that the student health fees that you pay each semester are NOT insurance. We strongly recommend that all students obtain health insurance to help cover the cost of off-campus medical needs such as emergency room visits, hospitalization, ambulance transport, specialty care, complex diagnostic tests, out of area care, or other services that are beyond the scope or hours of operation of the Wellness Center.

Converse University does not offer health insurance to students. Domestic (U.S.) students seeking health insurance coverage have the following options:

  • Eligible students may obtain coverage through a parent’s or spouse’s health insurance plan. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), dependents may be covered on a parent’s health insurance through age 26.
  • Students who are employed may be eligible for health insurance through their employer.
  • Students may purchase an individual plan through a private insurance company. Students can compare rates and coverage to choose the plan that works best for them.
  • Students who are U.S. citizens may obtain may wish to explore their insurance options through the Health Insurance Marketplace. The Marketplace offers affordable (and sometimes subsidized) insurance options through health insurance exchange programs operating in each state under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Students who have health insurance and reside outside of the greater Spartanburg area are encouraged to contact the insurance carrier regarding coverage of medical care while away from home.
