Behavioral Intervention Team
While many members of our Converse community deal with challenging situations every day, the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) tracks and assists in circumstances which are deemed “critical” and/or which may indicate unusual or harmful behavior or trends.
These circumstances include but are not limited to:
- The death of a family member, friend, fellow student or other individual in the student’s life.
- Any unusual, threatening or otherwise troubling behavior by the student directed towards themselves or others.
- Any wellness issue which is of immediate or serious nature including: emergency hospitalizations, life-threatening illnesses, alleged assaults, acute injuries, etc.
- Any critical incident or unusual behavior reported which may be helpful for tracking and follow up. (i.e. excessive absence in classes/work, excessive sleeping or changing habits, etc.)
- Any unusual, harmful or critical situation which happens to a Converse community member and is not listed above.
How do I make a BIT referral?
Referrals can be made by completing the Converse Cares Alert Form. The on-line form allows for 24-hour reporting; however, please note that referrals may not be handled until the next business day.
If you believe your referral requires more immediate attention, you may call a member of BIT directly at 864.596.9016 or 864.596.9258 If there is an imminent threat of any kind, contact Campus Safety at 864.596.9026
What happens when I make a referral?
- The BIT developed a protocol to ensure that critical student behavior or mental health issues or incidents are addressed appropriately.
- When a referral is submitted through the BIT website, each team member immediately receives the report via email. The team evaluates each report and a member of the BIT will reach out to the student of concern to assess any resources needed and collaboratively develop an action plan with the student to reduce obstacles for their success at Converse.
- BIT members will assist the student in coordinating with existing campus resources currently being utilized and then works with the student to monitor progress.
- In the event that a student is perceived to be at risk of harm to self or others, BIT may coordinate with appropriate College offices to assist the student.
- BIT may determine that there is no need to take any further action but will monitor the situation and concern.
Are the Referrals to BIT Confidential?
The BIT will take reasonable steps to maintain the privacy of those who make a referral to BIT, if requested but confidentially cannot be guaranteed. On occasion, due to the nature of the reported concern, the reporter may be evident to the student of concern.
