Converse Mourns the Loss of Roger Luttrell
Associate Professor of Accounting Emeritus Roger F. Luttrell passed away on May 21, 2026. Mr. Luttrell had been a full-time faculty member at Converse since 1996, retiring in 2017.
Mr. Luttrell’s most popular class, ‘Management: Disney Style’ included a trip to Disney World and the Disney Institute in Orlando, Florida, to study the Disney Corporation’s approach to management and leadership.
In 2009, the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants named Mr. Luttrell Outstanding Accounting Educator in the state of South Carolina.”I was really deeply humbled,” Luttrell told GoUpstate about the accolade. “I was just flabbergasted when (the students) told me.”
“He was a “gentle giant” — most comfortable around debits and credits, and a true teacher and mentor of students.”
Dr. Madelyn Young
Associate Professor of Economics and Anne Morrison Chapman Distinguished Professor of International Study Dr. Madelyn Young shared Mr. Luttrell was a wonderful colleague and friend. She said, “He was the best type of accounting professor; one who knew the “real-world” practice of accounting from years in the field, coupled with the ability to enlighten students to the need for and understanding of both basic accounting principles and upper-level material from the accounting realm. He could make dull T-Accounts interesting with his applications and stories of former real-life examples. He was a “gentle giant” — most comfortable around debits and credits, and a true teacher and mentor of students. He was an asset to the Economics, Accounting and Business Department and his retirement came too soon, as did his passing. He will be missed.”
Mr. Luttrell’s funeral was held May 27, 2026 at Hope Point Church, where he and his wife, Barbara, were founding members.
