Converse BIORETS: Providing Local Teachers Authentic Research Experiences
Written by Amanda Mathis
Applications for the 2024 Converse University Research Experience for Teachers in Biological Sciences (BIORETS) session were received through April 15, 2024. Funded by the National Science Foundation, this six-week summer program partners local teachers with Converse University researchers to learn field techniques and research methods to apply in their classrooms. Participants will receive payment for partaking in the program while developing a curriculum (lessons and activities) based on their research experiences to implement in the 2024-2025 school year.
“Converse’s BIORETS program provides unique experiences for teachers as they gain hands-on lab work opportunities, working side-by-side with scientists,” said Dr. Neval Ertürk. “We focus on providing new learning techniques applicable in the classroom. Converse University drives our city and region forward by working with middle and high school teachers to ensure STEM education is successful in our state.”
The BIORETS summer program at Converse University provides middle and high school teachers the opportunity to work in research laboratories in South Carolina. Teachers will gain hands-on lab work experiences working side-by-side with scientists, participate in professional development workshops, and have the opportunity to mentor high school students in the research program.
Converse University’s science and education faculty will serve as a resource for teachers and students throughout the 2024-2025 academic year.
BIORETS is spearheaded by the lead investigator, Dr. Ertürk, and supported by faculty members Dr. Mark Bohler, Dr. Edward Griffin, and Dr. Rich Keen.
“BIORETS provides science teachers the perspective to help students see their potential.”

“This program is open to teachers of underprivileged students and provides teachers a unique experience of helping their career journey and spark joy in their career path,” shared Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Edward Griffin, “BIORETS provides science teachers the perspective to help students see their potential.”
Converse University will select six teachers from South Carolina to participate in the Summer 2024 BIORETS cohort. Each teacher will receive a $10,000 stipend for their participation, the opportunity to participate in professional development activities, and a continuing education credit from Converse University.
During the summer, teachers receive mentorship from researchers to develop at least one lesson plan they can implement in their classrooms during the following school year. Converse science and education faculty will serve as a resource for teachers and students throughout the school year.
All accepted teachers must be science teachers with a contract to teach during the 2025 school year. Teachers serving in the Spartanburg and Greenville County Public Schools receive priority. If you have questions about the program, please email research@converse.edu.
