Dr. Melissa Walker’s New Book Inspired by Converse Course

A new book by history professor Melissa Walker grew out of a course she teaches at Converse College. Hub City Bookshop will host a special launch for that book, The Battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens: The American Revolution in the Backcountry, on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.

Dr. Walker, who holds the George Dean Johnson Jr. chair in history at Converse, will sign books and discuss her research and findings at the event. Hub City Bookshop is located at 186 West Main Street, and the event is free and open to the public.

The Battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens brings to light the world of the Southern backcountry that engendered its role in the Revolutionary War. With careful attention to political, social, and military history, Walker concentrates on the communities and events not typically covered in books on the Revolutionary War. Through government documents, autobiographies, correspondence, and diaries, the new book gives students of the Revolution an important new perspective on the role of the South in the resolution of the fighting.

Walker is the author or editor of six previous books on rural life in the South. She has been named South Carolina Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation.
