Dr. Jack Knipe is the Director of the Master in Management, and the Assistant Professor of Leadership at Converse University.

Martin Burgos Gonzalez ’26 traveled thousands of miles from Santiago de Compostela, Spain, to pursue his education in the United States. This spring, he celebrated the completion of that journey by graduating from Converse University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (concentration in International Business) and a minor in Marketing.

For Martin, commencement was about more than earning a degree. It was also a celebration shared with his family members who supported him every step of the way, including his 87-year-old grandfather from Asturias, Spain, who boarded an airplane for the very first time to attend Martin’s graduation in Spartanburg.

One of nearly 100 international students at Converse, Martin began his collegiate career at Oakland City University before transferring to Converse in 2023. During his three years as a Valkyrie, he excelled in the classroom while competing as a student-athlete on the men’s soccer team.

Reflecting on his college experience, Martin said, “This journey has been defined by growth, resilience, and unforgettable experiences both in the classroom and on the field.”

Throughout his college career, Martin balanced the demands of athletics and academics, graduating with a 3.45 GPA. He explains that his experience as a student-athlete has taught him lessons that will continue to shape his future.

“Balancing rigorous academics with the demands of college athletics taught me invaluable lessons in discipline, time management, and perseverance,” he said.

Martin’s commitment to leadership was evident during his senior year when he served as captain of the men’s soccer team. The opportunity to lead his teammates became one of the most meaningful experiences of his college career.

“Capping off my senior year by serving as Team Captain for the Valkyries was the ultimate honor, allowing me to lead an incredible group of men and give everything to this program,” Martin shared.

As he reflects on his accomplishments, Martin is grateful for the people who helped make his success possible.

“I owe a massive thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey, including my family, coaches, faculty, and teammates,” he said. “I am incredibly proud of what we built at Converse.”

Martin plans to bring the same determination and leadership that guided his success at Converse into the business world.

“As I step into this next chapter, I look forward to bringing the same work ethic and leadership to the business world,” he said. “The best is yet to come.”
