Converse Awarded $674,500 Grant From National Institutes of Health
Converse University has been awarded a five-year $674,500 grant to support its faculty-led biomedical research and expand research opportunities for students. Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), the grants are a portion of the $18.9 million that has been awarded to South Carolina institutions upon NIH’s renewal of the South Carolina IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (SC INBRE) to support biomedical research and infrastructure in the state.
“Grants like this help Converse to do what we do best: provide a transformational college experience.”
Jahnnie Conner
Under this grant, Converse undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in faculty mentored-research, receive hands-on biomedical lab experience, and further their professional development knowledge through weekly development meetings and the annual SC INBRE Career Development Workshop.
Director of the Office of Sponsored Research Jahnnie Conner said, “Grants like this help Converse to do what we do best: provide a transformational college experience. We are grateful this opportunity will provide funding for our faculty to further their research and the amazing work they do. For our students, it means they get to step straight into the lab and participate in meaningful, hands-on biomedical research while receiving mentorship from faculty.”
Recent faculty mentors have included Dr. Mark Bohler, Dr. Edward Griffin, Dr. Richard Keen, and Dr. Jessica Sorrells.
