Delegation from Converse Wins Again at National Competition

SPARTANBURG, S.C.– The song may be familiar but it is not a tired tune. For the fifth straight year, Converse College students have won Outstanding Delegation honors at the National Model League of Arab States Competition in Washington, D.C.

Delegations from 19 colleges and universities throughout the country participated in the 19th annual competition April 1-3 at Georgetown University. The students serve as delegates from Middle Eastern states in the competition and debate issues with their peers from other colleges. Five committees – political, economic, security, social, and Palestine affairs-judge the participants based on their debate skill and knowledge.

The Converse delegation, representing Jordan, captured Outstanding Delegate awards in four of the five committees. Stephanie Harris, Laura Massey, Nitu Bagchi, and Katie London took honors in their respective committees.

Additionally, Converse continued to dominate major leadership roles at the national competition as Converse students Neal Millikan, Stephanie Livesay, Gini Redman, and Anna Millikan all chaired committees. In the past four years, Converse students have chaired a total of 18 of the 20 chair positions.

Angie Brookhart served as Secretary-General, the major leadership position at the competition and Maria Perry served as Assistant Secretary-General. Maria was also elected Secretary-General for the 2002 National Model.
