SCICU Honors Madelyn Young with Excellence In Teaching Award
Dr. Madelyn Young was honored among our state’s top professors by South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) during their 2018 Excellence In Teaching Awards Dinner on April 12. The event marked the 13th year that SCICU has recognized top faculty members for their vast achievements at their respective colleges and universities.
The twenty Excellence In Teaching award recipients represent a wide diversity of academic disciplines and bring a wealth of knowledge, compassion, and enthusiasm to the students attending SCICU’s member colleges and universities throughout South Carolina.
Dr. Madelyn V. Young is Associate Professor of Economics and former Chair of the Economics, Accounting and Business Department at Converse College. She works in the areas of labor and urban economics, economic pedagogy, and social entrepreneurship, publishing in economics, leadership and popular and American culture journals. Most recently, her work on Harry Potter and labor economics theory appeared in the book, Harry Potter for Nerds, Vol. II.
Converse students thrive on the wide variety of Young’s courses, including Harry Potter and the Dismal Science and “Goldbugs, and Silver, and Land Tax, Oh My!”: Literary Economics in The Wizard of Oz. Young has led students on international study programs in Europe, North Africa, Central America, and Asia. She has taught as a visiting scholar at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, Fukushima College in Japan, and at the College of Economics and Technology at Anhui Agricultural University, in Hefei, China.

Barker adds that “Dr. Young finds innovative ways to show students how economics plays a vital role in their lives, using popular culture and examples from around the world.”
Dr. Young holds a PhD in Economics from Georgia State University, an MA in Economics from the University of Notre Dame, and a BA in Economics and English with a Concentration in Writing from Indiana University at South Bend.
